Useful Note

The following are some tips for calibrating a selenium meter:

1. To linearly reduce the overall light metering response, add a resistor between the metering cell (solar cell) and the circuit.

2. To enhance the overall light metering response linearly, reduce the total resistance between the two ends of the metering cell. For example, if the galvanometer is connected between two resistors to create a voltage divider, you must reduce the value of the two resistors while keeping the resistance ratio. Camera makers frequently utilise potentiometers (pots) instead of fixed value resistors, where the value is indicated by a colour code. To precisely measure the original potentiometer resistance value, desolder it but do not turn the adjustment screw. Wait until it has cooled to room temperature before measuring the resistance. Now you can determine the resistance ratios between the pots.

3. To change the high (low) light response, adjust the pot. It should be noted that a selenium cell has a slightly lower low-light response than a solar cell. You may have to alter the resistance accordingly.

4. A dependable light source is required to perform an accurate metering adjustment. When making adjustments, always utilise a dependable camera or light metre as a reference.
